Is GeoGuessr Actually Free in 2026? What You Really Get

Short answer: no, not really. On the website, "free GeoGuessr" means one Daily Challenge of 5 locations per day, behind a mandatory account. Everything else (Duels, classic maps, hosting games with friends) sits behind a subscription that starts at €35.88 a year and went up in price this January. The honest longer answer is more interesting, because what you get for free now depends on where you play. The Steam version quietly became the most generous free option, and the mobile app only unlocked its free Daily Challenge in April 2026.

Everything below is as of July 22, 2026. (Disclosure: we build CityGuesser, a free geography game, so we watch this space closely. Sources and dates are linked throughout.)

What's free, by platform

GeoGuessr's free tier is not one thing. It is three different things depending on the platform.

If your mental model of GeoGuessr's free tier is a few years old, the web got stricter and Steam got looser. Both changes happened with much less noise than the original paywall.

What the free Limited plan actually includes

One thing. GeoGuessr's own pricing table lists exactly one included feature for the Limited plan: "Play the Daily challenge" ("Keep your streak alive!"). Every other row has an X.

Here is what the X's cover, straight from the pricing page: ad-free play, private parties, creator mode, unlimited play, community play, web and mobile access, Steam access, map collaboration, and the Elite cosmetics. The Daily Challenge itself is real: five locations, one attempt, a 24-hour countdown to the next one. It is also popular. The dashboard banner on July 22 read "More than 205k players have played today."

Two details worth knowing before you sign up:

• There is no anonymous play. The button on the Daily Challenge page literally says "Sign-up and play." No account, no game.
• The free account lives inside a sales funnel. Signing up walks you through an upgrade screen first (there is an "Upgrade later" button, visibly placed, to its credit). The logged-in home screen keeps a permanent "Subscribe to play without limits! From €2.99/month" card. And GeoGuessr's own page at geoguessr.com/free opens with "Play GeoGuessr for free! No subscription needed," then tags every feature it lists except the Daily Challenge as "Included in subscription."

The Duels flow is the clearest example of how the free tier feels in practice. A free account can open Duels and gets a friendly welcome screen: "Play 3 games to be placed in a division." Click Play, and the actual answer appears: "Subscribers only," followed by "Subscribe & play unlimited duels" and a "From €2.99/month" button.

How much does GeoGuessr cost in 2026?

Prices went up on January 22, 2026. GeoGuessr's support article announcing the change says the increase "enables us to keep pushing GeoGuessr to new heights." Current prices (July 22, 2026):

For US players the January increase was substantial: yearly Unlimited went from $35.88 to $47.88 (a 33% jump), and monthly from $4.99 to $6.99. The Steam Pass was explicitly excluded from the increase. Two caveats: App Store SKUs round slightly differently ($47.90 a year for Unlimited), and GeoGuessr localizes prices per country, so your storefront may show other numbers. The EUR column is what the pricing page showed on July 22, 2026 from an EU country.

A few footnotes the pricing page won't volunteer:

• Pro Mobile is a trap for web players. It costs almost the same as Unlimited but only unlocks the phone app. If you ever play in a browser, it is the wrong purchase.
• The Steam Pass does not renew automatically, which is genuinely rare and customer-friendly. It also unlocks nothing outside Steam.
• Elite is mostly cosmetics. The gameplay difference over Unlimited is map collaboration; the rest is avatar style and monthly coin rewards.

Is GeoGuessr free on Steam?

More than anywhere else, yes. The Steam Edition launched in May 2025 to famously hostile reviews (around 84% negative at launch, over its stripped-down, subscription-on-top model). Over the following months the Steam version turned into the most generous free tier GeoGuessr has: since October 27, 2025, unlimited Quickplay Solo Duels and Team Duels are free there, and the Daily Challenge arrived on May 8, 2026.

So the paradox of 2026: the platform that got review-bombed for greed now offers unlimited free play, while the website that made GeoGuessr famous offers five locations a day. If you have a gaming PC and just want casual head-to-head rounds, the Steam download is the best free GeoGuessr there is. Ranked play still needs the Steam Pass or a linked subscription, and the classic single-player map experience does not exist on Steam at all.

Can you play with friends without paying?

Only if one of you pays. Free accounts can join party games hosted by a subscriber, and they can play challenge links that paying players generate. This is the loophole a whole friend-group economy runs on, as one r/geoguessr regular summed it up: "If its a challenge game, or a Party game, free accounts can play. But any competitive games, or single player maps, you need a paid account…"

The community has built infrastructure around this: sites like geochallenges.me collect shared challenge links, and a long-running public spreadsheet republishes daily challenge links anyone can open. Twitch streamers running ChatGuessr rounds are another genuinely free way in. None of this is piracy; it all rides on features GeoGuessr officially supports. It just means a free player's access depends on someone else's subscription.

Hosting anything yourself, private or public, is paid. That is exactly the gap between GeoGuessr and its free alternatives: in CityGuesser, anyone can open a room and invite up to 250 people without an account, which is why teachers use it the way they used GeoGuessr before 2019.

Why is GeoGuessr no longer free?

Street View costs money, and the bill kept growing. The full timeline:

• May 2013. Anton Wallén launches GeoGuessr as a free web experiment. It goes viral immediately.
• By 2016. Paid Pro features already exist (teacher blogs describe them in March 2016). GeoGuessr itself dates today's subscription model to 2019, but paid tiers are older than most retellings assume.
• July 2018. Google's sharp Maps API price increase takes effect. GeoGuessr's founder cites the resulting costs the following year.
• August 2019. The first hard restrictions: free play moves to lower-quality imagery, with one Google-imagery game per day as a test. This is when "GeoGuessr went paid" for most old players.
• February 1, 2024. Free general play ends entirely. The previous free allowance (about 5 minutes of play every 15 minutes) disappears, and the Daily Challenge becomes the only free game you can start yourself; challenge links and subscriber-hosted games survive as the exceptions. The same 5-per-15 allowance appears to resurface later as a perk of the cheapest paid tier.
• May 2025. The Steam Edition launches to an avalanche of negative reviews. The same month, community map makers black out their own maps in protest over GeoGuessr's planned Esports World Cup event in Saudi Arabia, and the company withdraws from the event within a day.
• October 27, 2025. Steam gets unlimited free Quickplay Duels.
• January 22, 2026. Prices rise across Pro tiers.
• April 17, 2026. The Daily Challenge becomes free on mobile.

Reasonable people disagree about the paywall. The costs are real (Google charges for Street View imagery by usage), and so is the frustration of watching a game that grew on free players wall itself off. The day the 2024 change landed, the top comment on r/geoguessr was "Capitalism at its finest"; further down the same thread, another player defended the change: "hosting such a large service comes with heavy server costs." Both are right, which is why this argument never ends.

Every legit way to play GeoGuessr free in 2026

The complete list, no tricks:

1. The Daily Challenge on web, mobile, or Steam. Five locations, once a day, free account required.
2. Steam Quickplay Duels, solo or team. Unlimited and genuinely free; the closest thing to pre-2024 GeoGuessr.
3. Challenge links shared by paying players (r/geochallenges, geochallenges.me, the community spreadsheet).
4. Party games hosted by a subscriber, including public Twitch ChatGuessr streams.

Those are all the routes GeoGuessr officially supports as of July 2026. Anything promising "unlimited free GeoGuessr" in a browser is describing a different game, which brings us to the obvious question.
